The route heads south out of the city on MEX-175 through the Valles Centrales, round the Ocotlán and Ejutla bypasses, and then takes the new highway over the Sierra Sur — 63.8 miles of it on the Autopista Barranca Larga–Ventanilla — down to the coast, finishing on MEX-200 into town.

Before the new highway, the drive meant the mountain road. The old road, MEX-131 through Sola de Vega, is 153.8 miles, about 3 hr 55 even on clear roads, and most of it winds. The new route is 35.3 miles shorter.
