Oklahoma City is 257.2 miles east of Amarillo, about 4 hr 30 without traffic. It is Interstate 40 the whole way, which makes it the simplest of the long runs out of the Panhandle to describe and one of the easiest to drive.
The road crosses the Texas–Oklahoma line past Shamrock and runs through western Oklahoma — Sayre, Elk City, Clinton, Weatherford — before reaching the city. For much of its length it runs alongside the old Route 66, which it replaced.

Route 66
The Route 66 corridor
I-40 was built along the line of Route 66, and between Amarillo and Oklahoma City the old road survives in pieces beside it, through the small towns the interstate now bypasses.

The stretch of I-40 across western Oklahoma is exposed, with long gaps between towns. In winter, ice and snow are what slow it; in spring, it runs through a part of the country known for severe storms.
