The drive
The shortest southbound transfer from CUN
Puerto Morelos is 15.0 miles from the airport, about 30–40 min. Of everything south of Cancún it is the closest, and it is no further from the terminal than the busiest part of the Hotel Zone — Punta Cancún is 15 miles by road.
That is because the airport already sits south of the city. Turning south onto Highway 307 puts you most of the way there, with no city traffic in between.

Two places
The town and the resort strip are not the same trip
There are two quite different destinations sharing this name, and the confirmation needs to say which one.
The town is a small fishing village a couple of minutes east of the highway, built around a square with the leaning lighthouse on the seafront. It is compact, walkable and low-rise, and the drop-off is an ordinary street address.
The resort strip is something else: large all-inclusive properties spread along Highway 307 for several miles, north and south of the town turnoff, most of them on private access roads off the highway. A resort using a Puerto Morelos address might be nowhere near the square.

The reef
The reef and the national park
The reef here sits unusually close to shore, and the stretch of water in front of the town is a protected national park. That is the reason the village stayed low-rise while the coast either side of it filled with resorts.
It also shapes the day. Snorkelling and diving trips leave from the town pier rather than from the resorts, so a stay on the strip usually means a short trip into town for anything on the water.
If the boats are the point of your trip, staying in the town rather than on the highway removes a drive from every morning.
The other thing this junction is known for runs the opposite way. Opposite the town turnoff, a road heads inland through the jungle past a string of cenotes — the freshwater sinkholes the peninsula is full of. It starts at the same set of traffic lights the beach road does, which is why a Puerto Morelos base puts both the reef and the cenotes within a short drive of each other.
We drop at addresses on either road. The cenote sites are spread along several miles of it, so the name of the one you are going to matters as much as the road does.

What time to leave Puerto Morelos for your flight
This is the most forgiving return on the coast, because the airport is so close. That is also why people cut it fine.
Allow the 30–40 min drive, then whatever your airline asks you to be at the terminal for an international departure. The highway north is quick, but the check-in cut-off is the fixed point, not the drive.
Add a few minutes at the start if you are on the resort strip: the access roads off the highway take longer than the map suggests, and a large property's entrance can be a fair way from its lobby.
