It is 73.5 miles from Cancun International Airport to Tulum, and about 1 hr 45 min in normal traffic. Almost all of it is Highway 307, the single road running south along the coast.
The highway part is straightforward and fast. What catches people out is the end: once you turn off toward the beach, the last few miles are slow. The beach road is narrow, busy with bicycles and pedestrians, and has speed bumps the whole way. Budget extra for it, especially in the evening.

“Tulum” covers areas that are a real drive apart, and the difference changes both the final stretch and what your driver needs to know.

Why the beach road takes longer than it looks
On a map the beach road is a short hop from the highway. In practice it is the slowest part of the trip. It is a single lane each way, shared with cyclists, pedestrians and delivery vans, with speed bumps at close intervals and no through route past the far end.
If your hotel is on that road, expect the final few miles to take a noticeable share of the journey. It is not a delay, it is what the road is.
What that means for you
- A beach-road hotel is a longer trip than a town address, even though the highway distance is the same.
- Evening arrivals are slower than midday ones.
- Give the property name, not just the kilometer marker.
CUN or TQO
Fly into Cancún or Tulum airport?
Tulum has its own airport, Felipe Carrillo Puerto (TQO), and if Tulum is your only destination it is worth pricing. Landing there turns a 73.5-mile drive into a short one.
The trade is flight choice. CUN has far more airlines and far more daily departures, so the ticket is usually cheaper and easier to change. If your stay is entirely in Tulum and the fares are close, TQO removes the longest drive on this coast. If you are splitting time between Tulum and anywhere north of Playa del Carmen, CUN normally still wins.

What time to leave Tulum for your flight
The return is the leg people underestimate, because the drive that felt fine on arrival now has a check-in deadline attached to it.
Work backwards from the airline's cut-off rather than from the flight time. Allow the drive, the beach road if you are on it, and the time the airline asks you to be at the terminal for an international departure. Add margin for a Sunday or a holiday weekend, when the highway north is busiest.
