Eugene to PDX, up the valley
It is 121.7 miles from downtown Eugene to Portland International Airport, about 2 hr 35 without traffic. The route leaves town on I-105, joins Interstate 5 northbound on the edge of Springfield, and then stays on I-5 for more than a hundred miles.
That long middle stretch is the Willamette Valley floor: farmland, grass-seed fields and the occasional town, with the Coast Range to the west and the Cascades to the east. Albany is about 45 miles out, Salem — the state capital — about 66, and Wilsonville, at the southern edge of the Portland area, about 94.
In Portland the main line stays on I-5 through the center of the city, turns east on I-84 along the Columbia River side of town, and takes I-205 north for the last short stretch to the Airport Way exit.

Why fly from Portland instead of Eugene
Eugene's own airport is 9.3 miles from downtown and easy to use. Its schedule, though, is far smaller. PDX, two and a half hours north, has many more flights and many more nonstop destinations.
So the choice is usually between a short drive and a connection, or a longer drive and a nonstop. For a long-haul trip, or a family traveling together with a lot of luggage, the nonstop out of Portland often wins. For a short business trip with a convenient connection, EUG often wins.
If you are flying in for a University of Oregon move-in, a break or commencement, compare both. When the flights from home land at PDX, the car covers the gap.

Portland
Two ways through Portland
The last half hour is the part that varies. There are two sensible ways to the airport, and the driver picks between them on the day.
The main line goes straight through the city on I-5 and then east on I-84. The alternative leaves I-5 at Tualatin and follows I-205 around the east side of the metro area the whole way, through Oregon City and past Clackamas, to the same airport exit. It is 124.6 miles, a few more than the main line, and about 2 hr 40 without traffic.
On a clear road the central route is quicker. At rush hour, or when there is a crash on I-5 in the city, the east-side loop is often the better bet. Because the price is fixed, which way the driver goes changes nothing on your bill.

Timing
When to leave Eugene for a flight
Two and a half hours is the free-flow time. The two places it grows are Salem, where commuter traffic builds on I-5 in the morning and late afternoon, and the Portland metro area, where it builds from Wilsonville onward.
Work back from the airline's check-in and bag-drop cutoff, add the drive, then add a margin for Portland. For an early-morning flight that usually means a pickup in the middle of the night. That is a normal booking, and some travelers prefer it to staying overnight near the airport.

Coming home
Landing at PDX and heading south
On the way back, the driver is waiting when you land. We track the flight, so a delay or an early arrival moves the pickup with it, and waiting is free for the first 60 minutes after the aircraft is on the ground.
The airport sets where pre-arranged cars meet passengers. According to PDX, limos and town cars are "on the lower roadway, outside of baggage claim", at the far end nearest the parking garage. The driver waits there, and we track the flight so the pickup moves with it.
From there it is the same drive in reverse: I-205, I-84, I-5 south, and about two and a half hours to Eugene or Springfield without traffic.

Winter weather on I-5
Most of the year the valley road is simply long. In some winters, though, snow or freezing rain reaches the valley floor, and the whole stretch between Eugene and Portland can be affected at once.
