Our Oregon work sits at the southern end of the Willamette Valley, the long, flat valley between the Coast Range and the Cascades that runs north from Eugene to Portland. Interstate 5 runs its whole length, and almost every trip here either follows it or turns off it.
Eugene is a university town first. The University of Oregon, its stadium and its track are what fill the calendar, and the valley's wineries are what fill the weekends between.

The valley
North and south on one interstate
The Willamette Valley is long and narrow, so distance here means north–south distance. The famous wine country — Dundee Hills, the McMinnville area, Yamhill-Carlton — is at the northern end, closer to Portland than to Eugene. The southern end has its own AVA, Lower Long Tom, a short drive from town.
That geography decides what a day trip is. A winery afternoon from Eugene is either a short run to the south valley or most of a day on I-5 to the north, and the two are priced very differently.
It decides the airport, too. Eugene has its own, a short drive from town with a small schedule. Portland's, at the far end of the valley, has many more flights, so travelers weigh a connection out of Eugene against a nonstop out of Portland and the drive to reach it.
Seasons
When the valley is busy
Eugene's calendar is set by the university. Football Saturdays at Autzen fill the town in the autumn, track meets at Hayward Field fill it in spring and summer, and commencement in June brings families from everywhere at once.
Wine country runs on the harvest. Late summer and early autumn are its busiest weekends, and the valley roads north of Salem are slowest then.
On a game or a meet weekend, book early: it is the combination of vehicles at one time that goes first, not any single car.
